Default steeroid vs pinto vs mustang-2?

Hey there, I was just wondering why the steeroid rack and pinion costs like 1,000$ when the pinto and mustang-2 cost more like 200$? :/ I mean they look a lot alike.... could it be that since the steeroid is a "corvette" upgrade, they charge way more? And would it be possible to fit one of those other rack&pinion onto the vette?

Isn't the Pinto non-power assisted? I have seen them in Summit's catalog and wonder if it would fit. Seems you would still have to put forth a preety good effort to make it turn at no or low speeds.

The rack alone is only a $300 piece. It's all the other stuff that gets expensive, expecially the aluminum steering shaft components from Flaming River. Billet aluminum u-joints, spherical rod ends, lightweight aluminum tie rod shafts, custom hoses, shaft supports, etc. get expensive. When I priced everything, it came to around $900 or so for me to buy the same materials (allowing $250 for the powder coated steel brackets). It's just not worth it to do it yourself, unless you're planning to go with, um, "uncosmetically appealing" wrecking yard parts.

Lohkay, weren't you the guy that was telling me he was "the next Merlin522" last year? ;) How did your Merlin big block turn out? How about the Viper suspension?

Aren't those others front steer? The C3 is rear steer so you need a rear steer rack (or custom steering brackets that point to the front)

I think 1000$ is quite hefty too.

Lohkay, to to a junkyard and get a rack from a '92 grand am 4 cyl 2.3 L MFI SOHC Quad engine car.....the hosed fit wonderfully with little adaption....and the rack is the one you need.....
look at my install, and you can see how it's positiioned....build brackets..
and use junkyard input linkages from whatever car seems to fit....
take the universal joints apart to mix/match up what you need....

I have less than 200 bux in mine.....

lol flareside... you are right, thats me! Plans have changed a bit since then but the final project is still the same. I ditched the viper suspension idea and will go with the 9" independant suspension packages they make for the custom cars. As for the engine, I'll go with one of those made by speed-o-motive. Most problably the 540 blown package. All that is far away tho.. Now, I'm slowly rebuilding the car.... everything is sandblasted and painted. The old engine (rebuilt with new solid cam) will go back in as well as the old 5spd richmond tranny. I bought a new centerforce clutch, changed the bushings and u-joints. All being said and done, this is costing way more than I had expected so it'll take more time than estimated but I won't give up.

gene, did you notice a significant difference in the steering feel and repsonse? i've driven other cars with rack & pinion but i don't feel enough of a difference to warrant that much time, money and effort. would R&P make a bigger difference on a shark? i know i should probably put rebuilding my steering box higher on my list since it's still original down to the grease but i might just go with the rack instead. like you, looks are not a factor to me. pretty does not always equal fast!
