Anyone every try to paint the red/white/black in the hood or gas emblems? I am getting my 68 painted, and the paint shop suggested I take it next door to a detailer to get the emblems painted vs. buying new ones.
Also, what is the difference in the red color of the emblem for the 68's ... is one a "true" red? The current color looks more like magenta then red.
do it yourself! there are some detailed instructions around here somewhere. I found a GM red touchup paint that I was very pleased with at an autoparts store. The other colors I got from a Testors paint set (but I didnt like their red). One of the secrets seems to be to thin the paint. That way it will go on smooth. Otherwise it it a little goopy.
Do you have an original 68 emblem that has rivet-like fasteners or do you have the 69/repro type emblem that has little nutlike things that screw on? MJ
Off topic....but if your signature means you have a 3 speed manual transmission '68 then you have a very rare car! Black book isn't handy but recall very few base 3 speeds sold!
I love the three speed '68 & '69s-but maybe he means 3spd automatic??? I think there were something like 424 '68 3spd cars and 326 3spd '69s. Missed not getting a beautiful '69 Monaco Orange Coupe for $10,000 several years over at Corvettes@Carlisle, which was 3spd, radio delete-not a single option except white stripe tires, 52,000mi-one of those Corvettes I always have kicked myself for not buying-new owner was shipping it over to Germany of all places.
Those emblems are the epitome of "cheesiness". They junk up the car and collect wax and dirt. Everybody knows it's a Corvette....so who needs a cheap little emblem? And who in the blue hell cares which red.....?
I was on vacation, so late post. The emblems are screw on nuts on the back .... did not realize there was another kind. Pics help - I am going to work on it this weekend and try different kinds of red.
And by the way, it is a 3 speed manual. Less than 200 made because they were the base model .... don't see many *any* around anymore - funny to think something that no one wanted in 68 would be considered unique now!!
To "echo" my bud, MNJack, original 68 gas lid emblems were riveted onto the gas lid using a "funky" spun rivet. 69 and up used the removable emblem with prongs and acorn nuts. If you have the prongs and acorn nuts, yours has been replaced somewhere along the line. Chuck
