About 3 weeks ago I decided to put new plugs and wires in my 1980.
Now it sputters and backfires to the point it can't be driven.
It's acting like one of the plug wires in on the wrong plug.
However, it's been checked and rechecked 5 times. The plugs
have been repulled to check the gap which is perfect.
The wires are on the plugs and the distributor cap tight.
Why why why is it still running this way ??? ! ! !
Did you remove and replace one wire at a time, or pull them all off and then re-install from scratch? If the latter, then you might be 'one off' on your distributor cap starting point for cylinder #1??

Have you put a timing light on it to make sure you didn't twist the distributor?
Are all the connections tight? Used dielectric grease?
Replaced the coil?
Tried putting the old coil wire back on to see if the new one's defective?
Checked the resistance on all the plug wires?
Done maintenance on the distributor?
Don't you have an HEI distributor? If so, which 'coil wire' did you replace? Other than the coil wire, I agree with SStonebreaker's list of other things to check, and also try replacing the dist cap - it's possible that something else just happened to go bad while you had the hood up...
Oh - one more thing. If you had the dist cap off, check that it's seated properly.
Might ground one cylinder at a time with a test light probe and identify the culprit cylinder. Then swap plug and wire to adjacent cylinder and retest.
if you pulled all the wires and replaced them at the same time theres a good chance you reversed 1 and 6, dizzy can be installed either way and only the rotor pointing to tdc is at number 1, or its 180 degrees off, ive seen this very exact same issue a dozen times
Cant tell you how many times I had 5 and 7 to the wrong plug after checking it again and again.
Curious to see if you didnt crack a plug when torquing it down

Did you by chance drop any of your plugs on the ground, I dropped a plug one time and it cracked, car ran like crap. Took me forever to find out what was wrong.
