'72 LT-1 convertible. Gas gauge has worked well since I got the car. Last week when I started the car, the gauge was reading at 3:00. Then it fixed itself shortly after. The next time I ran the car it read 3:00 again and has stayed there. I went over Wilcox's trouble shooting guide but I do not know where the gauge ground is located. Can someone help here? Thanks.
If the gauge is at 3, then the issue isn't a grounding issue it's an ohms input issue so I'm not so sure how closely you read the guide....
Pull the ohms wire off the gauge sender at the tank and ground it out... it should make the gauge go to empty. If the gauge does this then the the dash unit is fine (as well as all the wiring from the sender to the gauge). Then I'd pull an ohms reading from the sender to see if it's working properly.

Thanks. I guess I didn't read the troubleshooting guide well.
Not meaning to hijack. but, my gauge is pass full, missing ohms input. whats my next move? thank you. Clevan.
I'd test the function of the gauge first as described in the picture above... if the gauge works properly then I'd see what the sender is doing by pulling an ohm's reading off the wire. Go read the tech page on our site and you'll be able to figure out the issue. You didn't say what year the car was so I'm guessing 68-76.. if I'm wrong go to the tech page and enter the year, then search fuel... there is plenty of stuff there that will help you.
