Default Easy brake question

What does everyone use for brake pads- should I go with semi-metallic ... brands... ??? It's time for new pads-.. the brake fade is incredible and they squeel in protest all the time..

  :chevy

The accepted wisdom is that semi-metallic are a lot more likely to squeal. I got organic on my '69 and they still squeal a little. Just the nature of the vette brakes, what with the fixed calipers & all.

I see, well that certainly is helpful. Just why I posed the question to yall. There are after all no stupid questions... One thing I've learned this year with my car- now I'm shameless. I'll point to different areas of the engine with my mechanic and ask "what does that do?" - then listen intently... Thanks for the tip.

What JB says is very true...

For a street driven car, organic is probably the best way to go. Not only do they have less tendancy to "squeal", but they generally are better in situations where you need to stop quickly with the brakes cold... Which is typical of normal street operation. Less rotor wear with organic pads is also typical, although I have to admit that with the current crop of semi-metalic and composite pads, this advantage is probably minimal at best.

Where semi-metallic and race type pads come into their own is in their resistance to fade in prolonged high temperature operation... Autocross courses, road courses, etc. While some semi-metallic and composite pads do an adequate job on the street, I think you'll be happier with a quality organic pad unless you spend quite a bit of time on the track as well.

Good luck with your decision!

I'm using Performance Friction Carbon Metallics and I love them. They have excellent grip and are very linear in application. They squeal on occasion but if I change the pressure I apply it goes away. I am extremely happy with these pads. You can get them at most auto parts stores. I bought mine at AutoZone.
