My no longer new SB has been using too much oil since break in. The problem was found to be UNbaffled valve covers letting the oil go up the PVC valve. I replced the valve covers w/baffled and added an extra rubber baffle. The problem has slowed but still too much oil being used. The car does not leak or smoke. I'm thinking cylinder wash from a still too rich carb. I need some help here, any ideas? TIA

Use some oil dye to see where you are losing the oil.. Maybe some oil gets sucked throught the intake gasket... That's what's happening on my engine... My engine was zero decked and I put a different intake on the engine. The intake would have to be cut in order to fit perfectly with a zero decked block... However - my oil consumtption isn't all that bad and the oil consumption isn't all that bad... Cutting the intake is pretty expensive and I can live with a little oil consumption...
Thats the same place i'm finding oil with mine. If I pull the hose from the carburator thats connected to the pcv valve there's a decent amount of oil in it. Does your car smoke much?
i connect 1 VC to the pcv and carb.
the other i connect to the base of
the air cleaner. This removes crankcase pressure and lets the oil droplets drop out.
Here is an example. i got a 67 ford 289 in 1985 that was blowing oil out the breather. i hooked it to the air cleaner base, stopped the problem, i still use it once in a while today.
.
to check for a leaking intake gasket, put a vacuum gauge on the dipstick tube and tape over the VC holes. should be slight pressure when revved up in neutral. if it pulls a vacuum the gasket is leaking.

Re: Oil Consumption! (Matt Gruber)
I too am have an oil consumption problem that started it seems when I put the new heads on. If the intake gasket is leaking then one or more plugs are going to get fouled to the point where the motor does not run properly, correct ?
We should make a list of all the oil bandits out there here are some of the obvious ( and also a list on how to check for that particular probelm):
1) Intake gasket ( check spark plugs for fouling )
2) Valve guides ( leakdown test ? )
3) Piston rings (compression test ?)
4) Carb/intake manifold vacuum sucking oil thru the PCV ( look at hose to see how much oil is inside, should not be hardly any )
Check valve seals. If you remove the spark plugs and find oil around the plug threads it usually means leaking valve seals. If yur rebuild uses high volume oil pump combined with standard umbrella seals, oil controll is a common problem. If so switch to positive seals.
