I put a new ZZ4 engine in my '73 and my tach would not hook up to the dist/ignition setup on the ZZ4 (at least that what the lame mechanic told me). The car is an auto so it's not too big a deal but if there's an easy (inexpensive) fix I would like to do it.
Through 74 the tach were cable driven from the distributor so your choices are: use the old point type distributor, Pay mega $$$ for an aftermarket distributor with a tach drive........ or use a 75-77 tachometer. The last option is a good choice although a little on the difficult side to do. It would look stock and work with any dirtibutor.
The MSD tachdrive dist with vac advance for corvette (msd pn 8572) is about $290 ... any 12V coil will do ... BUT you MUST run a MSD box with that distributor ... boxes start at about $150.
The 75-77 tach swap works too.
But what happened to your 73's original chevy tach drive distributor? ... it'll drop right in (& work) the ZZ4.
Mystery Machine,
I just finished hooking up my new MSD dist, control box, new MSD wires and coil. It cost me a total of $512 from Jegs. It cost a little bit of money but my car has never started so quickly and idles really smooth.
It took me probably three hours to hook up. Very easy and straight forward. Follow all the instructions (unlike me) and you will have no problems at all.
