Ever since my cam swap out my car runs fine at idle but when I put it in gear and give it gas it wants to cut out and backfire a little. If I really feather the gas it will run but if I hit the gas at all it wants to stall. Not sure if I set the valve lash correctly. Does this sound like it might be set wrong.
Scott,
Having the same problem on mine. I have problems with cold starts with the new cam (have to feather it to keep it running until warm). I have it advanced per cam mfg instructions and jetting is per their suggestion. No problems after warm though. I was wondering if the lash needs adjusting also, maybe someone will chime in and shed some light on the subject.

Sounds like a choke adjustment issue to me. When you change the cam you have to mess around with carburetion and ignition as well. I don't think I've ever seen stock setups work perfectly after cams were swapped, unless it's a really mild cam, which the XE cams are not. Not really wild, but not mild either.
Try putting a little more choke into it.
Jeff
good advice from no-radio. Since i moved to FL in 89 i have not had a choke. i am in the habit of blipping the throttle while it warms up.
But don't neglect to optimize the timing.....
makes a huge difference
I have the timing advanced to 12 degrees. Don't want to go much past that. I never adjusted the valve lash before my cam swap so I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I tried to use Lars method but not sure if I did it right. If I have it slightly off would it run good at idle and reving it but backfire under load?
I'll take a look at the carb too.
What is the easiest way to cut a valve cover so I can adjust the valve lash with the engine running. I don't have a torch and don't know anyone that does. I don't want to do it with no cover on because I imagine oil gets all over the place.
