I've seen all the discussion of the relative merits, or lack thereof, of the cowl induction system, but since I have it, I'd like to have it working if possible. My car has the OEM manual transmission.
Here's the question. Is the switch that opens the flapper door (activated by the accelerator pedal going to WOT) the same switch that is used to activate an automatic transmission's kick-down function?
The activation switch which is under the dash and works off the accelerator . Several sources told me that "The General" had quit making that particular part years ago. Some sources even gave me a part number(3986863). Just for the fun of it I checked with a friend in the parts department at my local Chevrolet dealer. Sure enough, the part was discontinued under that number, but he did some research and found that the part is still available from GM under a new number.(1242101). I got the part and it is a direct replacement, works like a charm. Best part of all, the cost was $22.00 as compared to the $75.00 a restoration parts house wanted for a used "vintage" replacement. Just goes to show you, sometimes the best deal may still be at the dealership.
Thanks for that information. I have also found a couple of parts for my 45-year-old car at my friendly Chevy dealer. Using your information, he found the part but it is now discontinued. Curiously, he was able to give me Eckler's part number that corresponded to GM's 1242101. Eckler's has it as the T-400 auto kickdown switch, but there's no mention of it being the switch that actuates the solenoid for the cowl induction flapper. My suspicion is that it's the same switch. Zip also has it as the kickdown switch, with no mention of the cowl induction.
I guess everyone with a 4-speed just zip-ties the flapper door open and calls it done if the switch goes bad. If others were looking for the switch, one would think there would at least mention of what I assume is the other function of the switch.
