I am yanking the engine out of my 1969 tomorrow. I have pulled the engine out of my Chevelle a dozen times over the years... but it had an automatic. I have never dealt with manual.
Are there any tips with dealing with a manual box? Should I pull the engine out with the trans? What specifically would I have to unbolt or drop there... speedo cable,...
Yes - disconnect speedo cable (it won't really leak... you leave the gear assembly in place in the trans... just unscrew it from the trans housing and pull out of the way). Unhook your shifter arms from the levers on the trans (either pull the pins and remove rods from levers, or pull the bolts/nuts and remove the entire lever) and tie those out of the way. The shifter on my 70 is mounted to the CAR and NOT THE TRANS, so you can leave the entire assembly in the car. Remove the two bolts going into the bottom of the trans mount at the cross-member. Pull the driveshaft - detach it from the rear yoke in the trans, but KEEP THE YOKE IN THE TRANS to keep the fluid in. I leave the yoke in and just tie or wire it to the back of the trans.
Aside from that you should be good to go. I have pulled mine with the trans and without. The last time I pulled it without, but getting one of the four trans bolts out (drivers side upper) was such a PITA that I'll pull the trans now and couple them before putting it all back in. My opinion - easier to do both at the same time. Just keep in mind you'll need some patience when fishing it out and back in, will have to tilt it quite a bit, etc. A helper is a must. Same as your Chevelle, but a little tighter to the firewall.

I just pulled mine w/auto trans.Pulled RF tire and positioned puller RF front corner. Had helper help guide it up and out over fender. Once your locked and loaded it takes about 5 min
That is correct. This allows the engine hoist to slip under the car. Also get an engine leveler to attach to the hoist to allow tilting of the engine as you proceed. I normally leave the transmission in the car along with the bell housing but there are more than one way to do this.
All great tips. I pulled my engine and 4 speed together as one unit. Just pulled the shift lever, speedo cable and disconnected the driveshaft. The engine leveler was great ! I removed the hand crank from mine and used a cordless impact driver to move it up and down. Definitely get help to guide it out of the engine bay.

Yep. All points are made. I did not leave my yoke in and it didn't leak.
I pulled my 454 with the trans attached. Definitely from the side and definitely need a leveler.
I've done mine with front wheels on, every time. Then, once up you can roll the car out from under (if you have the space) instead of trying to roll the picker back with engine in the air.
