Hello All,
First the good news.. engine was rebuilt, started and broke in the cam today.
However.. After putting everything back together, specifically the transmission and shift linkage, I was assuming the linkage settings would all be the same since nothing was changed. When connecting the shift linkages to the transmission and crossmember, the shift arm now touches the center console bezel and will not stay in 1st and 3rd gear. I looked for some adjustments and see that the shift linkage housing/mount straddles the cross member, and there is no front to back adjustability. I suppose I could readjust the shift arms, however I’m baffled why they didn’t line up. Wondering if anyone has had this issue, and if it’s normal.
You should post some pics of the linkage to help with a diagnosis .What I did was get the shifter alignment tool to make sure that the shifter is in the right position ,then put the gear box in the neutral position and reconnect the linkages and was good to go.
Great advise everyone, thank you. Would there be a reason why the shifter won’t line up, just trying to understand what may have changed. The only item I changed was the motor mount -the OEM safety motor mount, but I can’t see how this would have changed anything. What I don’t want, is to allow binding that may have occurred during the re-installation, I did have one side of the car on jack stands, not an ideal level frame. I’m going to drive it up on four ramps, loosen the motor mounts and all of the transmission support and shift linkage to see if it settles. Sorry no pics, the shifter just hits the center console.

you may have pu the linkage in the upper holes of the shift arms which gives it a longer throw. Use the lower holes that are closer to the attachment nut and the shifter throw will be shorter. Either that or the arms are in the wrong holes

Check to see if your center console is loose and/or try adjusting it forward.
