Ok. Here's the deal. In the next few months I expect to be settling a lawsuit, from which, I will be recieving a sizeable amount of money. I was forced to sell my '76 in 1997 because I was hit by a stupid guy in a Civic and my insureance didn't pay off (long story). I worked my behind off to be able to afford my '79, but when I got it, it just didn't make me as happy as my '76 did. I've had alot of problems with it, and it just doesn't have the sentimental attachment that my '76 had. I want to buy it back. The car has been sold at least twice, and I can't get any information about where it is from anyone. I'm not sure if I still have the VIN anywhere or not. Can I get the current owner's name and address without it? What gov't agency do I need to go through? Could I do a CarFax on it? Please help me find my '76!

Without the VIN, you're almost totally out of luck. Carfax doesn't work for pre-1980 VIN's anyway. Unless you can track down the guy you sold it to, then follow the paper trail from there......

Greetings,
If you don't have the VIN on hand...something you may try is your Insurance Agent...A couple of years ago I tracked down a car I used to own and since I didn't have the VIN, I called my agent and they had it on file even though I hadn't had a policy on it for a couple of years. If your Agent doesn't have it, another way to track it is to make a friend at the police department or DMV (police department is easier) and let them search the database for you. After I got my VIN number from my agent, I visited a friend at the police department with the VIN and the next day, he stopped by the house with a printout of name, address, and if the car is licensed. I then graciously visited the person over 250 miles away in person (fortunately he was home) and after much talking and some cash, I was loading it up on the trailer and I still have the car to this day (73 Nova hatchback).

advise on the vin.....if it was insured or when you registered it.....you might be able to get the vin from your insurance agent...sometimes they keep records on vin numbers.....in Mass. they actually show the vin on the insurance policy...check with your agent and hope he keeps his records.....good luck

It's getting harder and harder to do what you're asking because of all the new "privacy" laws. A police officer/friend might be your ONLY source to try to find this info.
About 10 or so years ago, with all the "crazo's" running around, most states passed privacy laws. You used to be able to get automotive title and history info.
Why was it changed? Here's an example. Somebody cut's you off on the Interstate. You get mad and you get his license number. You go to the DMV and get the guy's name and address. You go to his house and ...."get even". LOTS of screwballs in the world, and they messed it up for anybody trying to find the history of a car....forward or backward. Chuck
