Hey,
I am planning on putting a big block into my 1981 this month.
I have the 400 turbo trans for it and I know my rear end will start breaking parts one after the other...
Any suggestions on a bullet proof rear end setup?
Is there anything out there that will bolt in and not shatter?
Anyone with a tubbed c3? Show me some pics please!
Someone told me there is not much room in the rear for a 4 link...
Thanks!
i would think a dana 44 would stand up to a rat motor.......(i believe all 81's came w/ dana 44's) would be cool to tub it and put a ford 9'' in though :)
:seeya Been there done that! :D You will need the short tail shaft on the turbo 400 trans. :yesnod: The biggest problem I have is lack of traction :D I usually have to leave the line feathering the gas pedal so I would loose traction but, once I'm moving I can nail it and still hear the tire's trying to hang on! It's a lot of fun at times! :D "Art Morrision does make a rear clip for the C3 if you still want to do that. The 4-links only measures 11"s! :yesnod: I have already looked into it.
There's a thread in the drag race section from someone who is currently designing a straight axle conversion for both C3's & C4's. He's looking to see if there is much interest and says the setup is quite slick :) Otherwise it's Toms's which is where my parts are from :yesnod: .
That straight axle setup sounds like it has the most potential... I want to junk the current setup, I just dont think it will ever hold what I eventually want to have...
Mine has broken 3 times allready... with a 370 hp small block!

What broke on yours? I've broken mine twice. First time was minor (a broken u-joint cup that spilled out the needle bearings) but I caught it in time. Second was major, coming out of 1st to 2nd at about 5k rpm. Sheared both sides of a u-joint which left the halfshaft free to destroy everything in its path. No damage to the Dana 44 though (except a side yoke). You can see pics at http://www.c3vettes.com/chris_81_2.html
The 80 & 81 auto tranny vettes used small u-joints, so I'm now in the process of switching things out to use the standard tranny setup. I'm really hoping that fixes this problem (my wife thinks it would be cheaper to stay off the fun pedal but I have no idea what she's talking about).
Chris81,
If I read your post correct....The 80 and 81 has smaller U-Joints?????......OhhhhhhNooooo don't tell me that....I just ordered a set of spicer 1350 and they do look big....I hope I'm not ordering the wrong ones  :seeya Cappy

The ones they used with the manual tranny setup are the larger ones. For the automatics, they used the smaller ones. The Spicer part# for the larger is 5-627X and the smaller is SPL25-1X (but that # may have been changed to SPL22-1X). I guess you saw the pic comparison at http://www.c3vettes.com/spicer_man_auto.jpg The more I hear about problems with breaking u-joints, the more I think about what I've read concerning those bearing cups. Evidently, the torque applied to the strap bolts is somewhat critical, and if overtightened can cause the cups to become slightly deformed and will cause rapid wear and eventual failure. I guess it's because of the shape of the straps (curvature doesn't exactly match the cup). I would think most general repair shops aren't aware that the torque specs on those 1/4" bolts is only 15 ft.lbs. and they should have thread locker applied (new replacement bolts have the compound already applied). The C3 Shark Tank has some pics of the Van Steel HD replacements for the straps. They look awesome and probably eliminate the deforming problem (if that's really what's happening). I wish they were much cheaper... Here's the link http://www.c3sharktank.com/tech2/ujointcaps.html
Chris81,
I found them....the smaller ones for the 81 w/auto Trans.....I went back to the driveline shop and they had a set sitting in the bins.....Cancelled the order for the 1350....Those spicers look awesome....very solid looking joints.....I'll be sure to torque em down to 15 ft lbs of torque.....I do have the Van Steel caps kit, however I have not installed since it looks like a major pain in the butt to drill and tap....what a waste of $$$.$$.....Maybe I'll do it later when I have the time....Thanks for the info....Aloha :seeya Cappy
