I spent all day yesterday trying to resolve why the car was not charging. I was getting 12.40 volts with the car off and 12.3 volts when the car was on. I have a new battery, so was pretty sure that was not it. Took the alternator to have it tested and it passed. Checked every wire and replaced a couple. Finally went and bought a new alternator, still no change. The brown wire to the alternator was getting only millivolts. Traced that one back through the schematics and it went to the GEN light. Pulled the dash apart AGAIN (the wiring on this car was a nightmare) and found that there was no bulb or bulb socket in the printed circuit. Pulled the clock illumination bulb and put it in the GEN socket and turned the car on, 14.86 volts.
Is the car new to you? If the lamp was missing - then it probably hasn't been working properly for a while.
bought it a few months ago. Interior was trashed, been working on getting all of that and some other problems sorted. Also had to do some body work, old tire exploded while it was sitting in the garage. Found the charging issue when I went to get it inspected.

Not sure, it happened a few weeks after I bought it. Tires looked good so I did not inspect them. Turns out they were from 2004, my guess is some kind of dry rot and over inflated. I did not check the other 3, just aired them down as quick as I could.
