I have had alot of different opions on this topic. I am doing my 79 over the winter and am going duels all the way with flow though cats. Some car guys I know are saying why go with headers and the leaking problems they have. I am told that if you polish the insides of the stock manifolds it is just as good with less future problems! My stock manifords have the # 3932461 on them. Are these the stock ones?
I have had my headers on for 5 years and they don't leak. If they are installed correctly and checked every once in a while to make sure they are tight you should have no problems. Buy a good quality set no cheepos. The headers will be a big improvement over manifolds. If they did not produce horsepower racers would not use them. I think they are one of the best dollar for horsepower value.
Headers allow for the engine to breath, or shall we say, exhale, a lot smoother. In one exhaust manifold, you have four exhaust ports sharing the same exit. This means that as one cylinder releases it's exhaust into the manifold, another does the same immediately afterwards and so on. This creates a back-compression in which the exhaust tumbles around a bit, instead of quickly making it's way down the tubes. Headers cure this problem, as they allow each port to have it's own exhaust exit, which reduces the back-compression, and allows for a freer flowing exhaust. The ability to breath in large amounts of AIR/Fuel and exhale them quickly is where horsepower is made. Remember this on your quest for more power and it makes everything a little easier!!!! Good-Luck!!! Joe
