Default 71 big block brakes question help

I got my 71 back and the brake pedal goes almost half way before it grabs. Does not seem firm enough. My mechanic said that’s the best there gonna get. I don’t remember them being this way before. It’s been long time .
Im running a roller 282/290 cam at 110 in a ls5. Everything works good, lights , wiper door etc.
The car stops good you just have to go pretty far down on the pedal. All the calipers were replaced, still stock.

Should they be that way?

A little help here, please. Back from where? I'm guessing the shop. What was done at the shop? Did it involve the brakes?.

My bad... yeah just got it back from the shop. I Had the brakes done and the rebuilt the motor. I replaced the all the calipers. The old ones leaked. And really don’t remember what they were like before it’s been so long. The pedal goes almost half way down before they start to grab I’m almost at the floor. Stops straight. Stops good. I’m unsure about how they should feel.

Brakes are not bled properly or you have leaks that are allowing air into the system....Mostly likely not bled correctly........getting all the air out of the calipers and lines.

My VBP SS calipers that I put on in 1985 are rock solid using Performance Friction Pads and SS braided hoses as well........OEM master cylinder, power brake booster and GM distribution block.
Change the Brake fluid every 4-5 years-IMPORTANT!

Some possibilities:

Incorrect MC installed. There are two different piston / bore sizes.
Incorrect MC installed making the brake pedal rod too short of engaging the MC piston.
MC was never bench bled.
MC was bench bled incorrectly resulting in a air pocket lodged there and throughout the system.
Booster rod out of adjustment (the gap) if adjustable.

warped rotors will push pistons back and forth, and you wont have good brakes,,

use a dial indicator and ck rotor ''run-out''
