Compression won’t tame a big cam, but displacement will. Your problem is the dynamic compression ratio is way too low and it bleeds off what little compression you make before it translates to power. Every point of compression you add will move the power band down about 500 rpm on this engine. I would target 11:1 simply to be able to run premium fuel and avoid needing special fuel of bogus additives. It will wake the engine up.
