Default Vacum leak??

I recently put in a XE256 cam and a new performer intake. I am only getting 13 inches of vacum out of the manifold. Shouldn't I be getting at least 17 or so?
The car is idleing great. I can rev it up to 4000 when it is in park and its running good. When I put it in drive and get to about 1500 RPM it dies. I can drive it if I feather the throttle a lot. I don't understand it. If it revs up in park shouldn't it be good in drive? I think it is vacum because my lights won't come up and the brakes are horrible. They use to be really good. The lights always sucked but they always came up after 30 seconds or so.

1. How do I check for a vacum leak?
2. What causes the engine to die in drive if it runs good in park?
3. How to fix the problem?

Thanks in advanced for your help.

Remove and plug the hose that goes to the vacuum controls and lights. If that doesn't work, plug the vacuum line to the booster. If that doesn't work look for manifold leaks. Good luck

Scottw,
I agree with Duke, take as many variables out of the equation as possible first. I just did the same to mine except a different cam (cam specs can be found on the bottom of this page www.angelfire.com/al/swhite7/engine.html). My vacuum is a constant 16. Let us how how it checks out.
