The 14" flywheel is out, but I do not see any bolt to fasten it to the flywheel, except 1 pressed in pin. Do I need to press out this pin? The date code is 71.
Are you replacing the ring gear on your flywheel? They are pressed on and sometimes tack welded. The dowl pin is to attach the flywheel to the back of the crank.
Your post is a little confussing.
You'll need to take it to a machine shop. The ring gear is an interference fit, the ring gets heated on a hot plate to expand the diameter, then the flywheel gets dropped/pressed into the center.
removal of the old ring gear is usually just to break the rin in one or two places with a chisel
I just did this a few months ago. It's really easy.
1. Set the flywheel on wood blocks or something to elevate the actual ring gear off the work surface. The gear comes off the front (relative to how it's installed in the car) so the clutch side surface should be pointing up.
2. With a hammer and a steel punch/drift hit the ring gear in a crossing pattern until it comes off.
3. Heat the new ring gear in the oven at about 300 degrees for 20 minutes.
4. Turn the flywheel so the clutch surface is facing down. Slip the new ring gear on. You may have to tap it on but it won't require much force.
BTW I got may new ring gear from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com for $34.00 plus $8 or so for shipping. The local dealer wanted $60 and didn't have it in stock. GM part number is 460583.
