Headman Header Owners
To those that own the full length Headman Headers part #68300 or 68301 (same header, ceramic coated), I have a couple questions for you.
a: Collector exit: Does the collector point straight back, does it tilt down towards the ground a little or up a little?
b: Ground Clearance: How is the ground clearance with the collector ?
c: Engine Bay: Are there any really tight areas? Did you have a hard time installing them? Did they go in from the top, or the bottom ?
d: Spark Plugs: Anyone running these with angle plug heads? If so, how is the fit ?
Let me know your impressions of these headers please.
The collector points to the ground.
Ground clearance is okay.
They're not really tight, I had ample room in my 82. The only thing is that the pass. side header was a bit close to the tranny oil pan (700R4). I cut off the flare and plectrum ring and widened the exhaust pipes and made it a slip over system. Also saved on ground clearance.
Never had spark plug problems. As long as you're running 90deg boots and not those long accel thigns you'll be fine.
The collector slightly points towards the ground, the ground clearance if fine, I've never scraped them on anything, and the install is pretty easy, passenger side is a breeze, and on the driver's side the clutch linkage had to removed to install, but that's not hard to remove/reinstall. Overall I definately like them :yesnod:

What about leaks? I jjust got a set for my '76 and Im looking at the flanges... they are half the thickness of thorleys. :hat
Problem is that Thorley has no smog legal ones for my car and I had to go elsewhere. I'm gonna install them with the 383 stroker when it's done but I sure don't want any flange leaks!

Re: Headman Header Owners (SanDiegoPaul)
Why can't they make headers that have the collector pointing straight back, the Dynomax headers point towards the ground too, one reason I didn't install them when I had them, most people would not notice but I can't stand the look. It's friggin stupid, means you have to actually bend the connecting pipe up , jeeshe !
Brian,
I like my Headmans and they were easy to install.
a: Collector exit: Does the collector point straight back, does it tilt down towards the ground a little or up a little? straight back
b: Ground Clearance: How is the ground clearance with the collector ? Only scraped once and only on the collector flange
c: Engine Bay: Are there any really tight areas? Did you have a hard time installing them? Did they go in from the top, or the bottom ? I don't know about an '80 but I didn't have any problems installing them in my '71. I went from under the car.
d: Spark Plugs: Anyone running these with angle plug heads? If so, how is the fit ? I have a ZZ4 also and the only problem I have is the plugs on the end cylinders 1, 7 and 2,8 I have to use my spark plug socket with the 6 point bolt type end on it and an open end wrench to get them out, but it is no big deal.

A> Mine seem to point straight back -I'll have to check again.
B> ground clearnace is fine I have only hit on a really high speed bump that i went over too fast.
c>both went in from below - my only problem was the idler arm was too close for my taste so I dimpled the tube a little at the rubber boot on the idler arm pivot. very small dimple.
d> I would say angle plug heads would work fine on these heders
For the ground clearance issue... how many of you are running 550 lb front springs with the full drop? Do YOU guys have trouble with scraping?
-Steve
All the time and I have a deep gouge on one of the pipes right before it enters the collector. Also, there is a leak inside the collectors, both sides.
