I am trying to remove the pilot bearing.
I have a puller, but can not get it to bite on the bearing.

Puller is a:
2 small bars each with a lip go into the bearing then bolt is tighten via T-handle.
when tight a nut is turned and the puller should extract the bearing
If it is a bronze bushing just thread a 5/8 inch bolt in and when it bottoms out in the crank it will turn out perfectly. No mess. Never got the grease or bread thing to work for me. If your bushing isn’t bronze you might have to run a tap through it first.
the dowel needs to fit pretty tight for the grease trick.
Sometimes you can find a deep well socket that fits, just use a short bolt and or extension to plug the hole in the socket.
this works if you can get it threaded tight. It works better on bushings though.
Get a large tap. Cut threads in bushing. Get longer bolt and run it until it bottoms against crank. Keep turning and it will pull the bushing right out.
looks like a needle bearing. or at least used to look like a needle bearing. by now the needles are gone and it is an outer race. basically a hard sheet metal sleeve. small cold chisel and start banging the edge in towards the center.
That is the same type of puller I borrowed from Autozone. Looked brand new and didn't work worth a crap. I ended up chiseling mine out (again) -- works well, I've chiseled mine out several times over the years.
Autozone also loans out a slide-hammer puller but did not have one the day I was pulling my bushing. Might want to ask for that one.

This is the puller i have tried. It does not grab the bearing
Is there a different type that works? slide-hammer?
The bearing is out!!!
Loaner tools did not work, so....
Like any good mechanic..... I want to Harbor Freight during lunch and pickup up a cheap slide hammer puller.
it was the toughest pilot bearing I have ever seen but it's out. The cheap puller worked quite well.
