I lost one of my front speakers (in the kick panel) and actually have a day to fix things on the car tomorrow. Soo, any experiences with replacement speakers? I have a Blaupunkt CD/radio that puts out 50W per channel and want to keep the stock size (close, anyway) and location. What size are the originals, anyway? As always, all help is appreciated!
Stock speakers are 4x10. I don't know what is available in that size, by 73 they went to 4x6 in the dash and Infiniti plate speakers fit and sound great. I put a 220uf capacitor in the + lead to kill the bass that they can't pump out anyway. Joe
The stock speakers are 4x10, bnto 4x6. I actually have an original speaker if you want it. (Can't imagine anyone that cares about sound quality actually wanting it though).
I replaced mine with some cheap 4x6 speakers. I think 4x10 would have been a better fit. i had to do a little drilling and fit some strips of metal in as brackets. With the kick panels back on, all is good.
I found that anything bigger than a 4x6 was not too wide but too DEEP. Modern speakers have bigger coils/magnets and need more depth. A 4x6 fit fine. The 4x10s I found definitely fif not!
Seriously though, If I had to do it all over I would have built speaker boxes for the back. Your never going to get good sound out of that old radio and wimpy speakers.
I've already got a set of nice Kenwoods in the back in a set of boxes I made myself, that are removeable with velcro attachment. It sounded great for a bit, but the stock, original speakers lasted just a very short time! I'll check out the depth issue. Any guesses on how much room I have to work with?
Thanks for the help, folks.
