Default Sidepipe Exhaust Leak

While I was looking closely at the motor after the odd heating issues that I’ve had, I noticed an exhaust leak at the flange connecting the sidepipe to the exhaust manifold. Wasn’t too bad and I was going to clean it with fine sandpaper and move on but then I read something on here and got to thinking that perhaps there should be something else there. I had no idea that you were supposed to use donuts (packing) with sidepipes.

Thanks to Bird for convincing me that there is no such thing as a stupid question and TimAT for confirming the packing and the need for a sleeve.

Now to the questions.

1). I’m pretty sure that I need the 2 inch donut and sleeve as it’s a small block car, but is this measured as OD or ID? Looks to be around 2 and 1/4 OD so I’m guessing it’s not 2 and 1/2.

2). How does the packing work on the passenger side? I have the EGR gasket above the spacer but it doesn’t appear that a sleeve is used. If you look closely at the diagram below, it kind of looks like it goes below the flange.

Thanks to all for not ridiculing me. I have been driving it this way for a decade.

You need a donut gasket and sleeve for both sides. The sleeve fits into the pipe and the donut gasket slips over the sleeve.
You will require the 2" version of these.

Thanks Joe, that makes more sense than what I see in the diagram.

Sure.
Once assembled the donut gasket will sit against the pipe flange. The pipe is then inserted into the manifold and held into place by the flange with 3 nuts. I had
a hard time getting the side with the heat riser to mount as the stud threads were just a bit short. I had to back the studs out of the manifold about 1/4" to get it
to bolt up and seal.

Thanks again Joe. While getting ready to order these I came across something I obviously desperately need as well. Sidepipe ground straps. Where do they attach and why do I need them?

That is a good question. I do not have ground straps on my side pipes. I know the under body exhaust had them, but I was unaware of side pipe grounds.
Let me look into that.
