was thinking of using t-5 for overddrive trans for street use, not for racing etc. just need overdrive for road, wondered what gears rations it had, strength, problems in installing, etc. thanks.
I heard it wasn't that strong, which is why it wasn't mated with the 350 in the 80's. You could only get it on the 305 F-bodies and such. They were used in Mustangs, but we all know that they had no power.
Do a search on past threads. Lots of info. Normal Wilhelm is(has) used one with no problems. Even used one off a Ford with a homemade adapter. I hope to change over to a T-5 in the future. Everything I have read is that they will work just fine for non-racing applications. I think you would want the later world class T-5. I want an overdrive without the expense and fabrication of a 6 speed.
I like the T5 transmission. I used a ford T5 in my blown bigblock for a year and had no problems. I used the ford T5 because they were cheap, about $450 CDN. A used Chevy T5 went about $700-$900 CDN and were hard to come by. The T5 has a .68 overdrive and with my 4.11 rear end gave me 2.8 on the highway. The T5 does not like to be power shifted. You will not break 1st doing burn outs but 3rd will let go if you abuse the box by power shifting. Make solid clean shifts and it will live. I have an original T5 in my 355 nitrous slicked 11 second 89 mustang and have never experience a single problem. I do burn outs but never power shift, just nice clean shifts.
A few guys are using the 6 cylinder T5 with nitrous 350's and blow about one a year but they power shift all the time and do wild burnouts with the nitrous and line locks. Still a transmission last about 1 season under this abuse. A mustang T5 is rated around 300 ft lbs continuous for 24 hours.
For a cheap source of an overdrive transmission I recommend them. Even behind my 940 HP blower motor it last a full season and I only sold it because I was offered $1000 for it and I used this money towards a Tremec TKO.
I am looking at this swap some time this winter. After hearing Norval's advice about not powershifter, which I don't do anyways, I think it will be a nice and relatively cheap upgrade. :yesnod:
