I put in a new starter yesterday. Car started right up the first three times and then......on the fourth attempt, the starter motor continued to spin after the engine started. I turned the ignition swith off but the engine and starter motor both continued to run. Pulled the coil wire and disconected the battery. When I put the battery terminal back on the starter motor spins.
If it was a "new" rebuilt parts store starter, then it was a crummy rebuild done in Mexico or China, the solenoid is probably stuck and the bendix is staying engaged. Take it back to the parts store and make them give you your money back. Then buy a good quality mini-starter, I'm telling you this because in 2 years I went through 4 parts store starters. I still have one "new" in the box, that never worked! I took it back and they put it on their tester and said, "Ain't nuthin' wrong with it, it works good!" Well, it doesn't work on my car. Amazingly another replacement starter from another store spun the car up fine, (for about 3 months) and then it stuck just like yours. They replaced it and I used it for about 2 weeks before I started my engine swap. Now I'm going with a GM high torque ministarter, I'd rather spend $200.00 and not have to switch starters every few months.
This is probably not it, but once I did not tighten the small ignition sheild on the starter, and it eventually grounded against the block :smash: Same symptoms
starter was a new ac/delco rebuild from the dealer. I replaced the solinoid with a hiperf model before installing starter. replaced the hiperf solinoid with the stock one and problem cured. appears the hiperf solinoid was defective. but now the engine won't start...
I had the exact same problem except I was 20 miles from home and had to keep driving with the starter whirring away. About half way home it stopped. Never exactly figure out what caused it.
I had bought my rebuilt AC Delco starter from Ecklers and in a pinch to replace it, went to the local Autozone and bought a rebuilt brand that I hadn't heard of before. When I opened the box it was an AC Delco.
From Autozone this was less than half the cost of the Ecklers. It has been running fine for two years now.
