I am looking at a "house style" as seen in the pic below. The advertised size is 11' x 20'. But I need to get the 11' width down to 9'. Can those aluminum posts be "persuaded" by brute force to be bent in one foot on each side and anchored into asphalt? Or can they be heated and re-formed to meet that size requirement? Without going into details, I am strapped for space.
I was in the same boat a couple of years ago and needed a winter hiding place for a freshly painted toy. I built a "custom" frame from 1 1/2" schedule 40 pvc pipe and covered it with a silver tarp screwed to the frame. Worked great, wish I would have taken some pics
Since the walls are angled, you may also be able to shorten the height to lessen the width. I would just go buy some steel, a tarp, and start welding...
Paul, you must be having 'vette withdrawals! :D I'd think that there are probably other sources for these "garages" that are smaller or adjustable. Building your own out of PVC pipe might be a good idea, but I wonder how it would hold up to a 20" snow? In fact I wonder how the factory built ones would hold up?
A couple of people mentioned making your own out of pvc pipe, I had an idea I've been thinking of trying ... use the pvc pipe and cover it with the same plastic material they use to "shrink wrap" boats for the winter months. It's a heavy plasic that they use a heat gun on to mold to any shape. When it cools off it becomes rigid. Might be worth looking into ... good luck!
Paul, we had a "CoverIt" shelter at our first house (we didn't have a garage). The quality of the shelter is very good (for the price), and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. The material is an extremely strong fiber reinforced waterproof weave, and it has a sewn in rope tensioning mechanism. I ordered it factory direct at a custom size, so your width issue shouldn't be a problem.
Re: Silly Question re Portable Garages (Flareside)
Hi Paul, I stopped in at a neighbour's a few blocks over yesterday to ask him your question as he has one in his driveway. As long as you have secured the sides well with guide wires he waid that your idea should work fine. His has been up over the last 3 winters and he loves it.
Thanks for all the replies. The 11' x 20' version is $376CDN ($240US) which I find very reasonable. I will enquire if a 9' version is available or can be custom made at a decent price. (For Canadians, it is at Rona Hardware.) If not I will adapt your suggestions to the 11' version. BTW, it is for next summer so snowload is not a problem. I will be having some construction work done around the house and need a temporary structure. And we do not have hurricanes here but some thunderstorms do pack some pretty strong winds.
