Hey guys quick question about clocks. Making sure I’m doing things right. So I ordered a 1980 clock and got it on the weekend. Instructions say to bench test to make sure not defective. So after watching numerous videos and reading forums etc. I got my little 12v battery hooked up positive wire to rear terminal/threaded part and ground to a metal housing...... and nothing. Second hand doesn’t move nothing moves. I trying to manually adjust hands maybe was stuck and try again and still nothing. I was very careful didn’t touch the housing with the positive wire as that will short it out. I used my volt meter and touched the terminal. It’s getting power. Am I missing something here? Is it possible that it only works if hooked up to circuit board and installed? Or is it possible that I was lucky enough to get a defective one. I was told the new reproduction quartz movement were flawless. Maybe someone can give me some insight as all my research outlets are exhausted.
So I decided to just hook up everything in the car and turned out
the clock works. Not sure how I messed up a bench test but
I did.
Phil,
To bench test, you attach power to the power terminal and ground to the case. What people do sometimes is hook an alligator clip to the terminal and it can short out on the case and short out the clock so you have to be careful.
Also, sometimes on the quartz clocks when you first convert or hook them up they will run backwards for a few seconds and the proceed to go from there on. Glad you figured it out.
