Default 71 Reae noise

My 71 has a kind of a whirring noise almost like a helicopter blades whapping or like the noise you hear in a 4 door pickup truck when rear windows open but front closed. Not very loud but there
. Rear bearings were profesionally replaced by Stoudts Corvettes last year so am pretty sure not them. Tires are new and am suspecting them. HAs anyone experienced the rear doing this noise? It does NOT sound like metal or gears -

have you checked the differential fluid level and the condition of the fluid?
did you replace the half shaft u-joints when you did the bearings?

Does it just make the noise when driving straight or only when turning? There is a GM differential additive that you have to have in the gear oil, otherwise the rearend will make a "whomping" sound when turning...

Had Fluid replaced today - noise still there (maybe a little quieter) . Half Shaft U - joints were not replaced at bearing time. they were replaced less than 2000 miles ago and HD ones put in. Jacked car up tonight and see no play in any of the universals or spindle BUT seem to have a lot of in/out play on the side yokes of the differential. Much more on RH side. Should there be in/out play there?

Seems to happen straight or corners - but seems to be loudes at low speeds and NOT under power or lite power. At higher speeds or under power noise SEEMS to go away - but I could be fooled - 1 higher speedss means higher pitch - 2) have hooker header side pipes .... I am 67 with hearing aids so both those could be factors in me not hearing it. as I posted in my other response "Jacked car up tonight and see no play in any of the universals or spindle BUT seem to have a lot of in/out play on the side yokes of the differential. Much more on RH side. Should there be in/out play there?"

There is a c-clip on the end of each yoke that sometimes comes off and falls into the diff.
You may have to remove half shafts-slide out yokes -fish out clips/replace
This is a big job as it requres removal of the rear diff and half shaft/spring

Next time you are in your car get it going and slip it out of gear and listen
The gears in back should not be moving or under load.
