Could someone tell me what the switch on the right side of the steering column is for??

Releases the IGN to "OFF" position, which allows key removal. Anybody that was around in the 70s could do that blind-folded with one hand, one movement.
It just came naturally.

I wonder if anybody figured out how to over-ride that lever permanently. There's really no need for it.

My 77 had it ,I had to preflight that feature to everyone that drove it.

That explains why my key would come out and the car would start without the key I thought it was for valet parking thanks for clearing that up
