I'm probably going in again this weekend, but I've been there before on switches for a couple of different cars (including my Corvette).
There's a release button on the back (sometimes the side) of the switch. Depress that button and then pull the **** out. Depressing the **** and pulling the switch don't require much effort, so don't force it.
Good Luck.
Whoops! Just reread the post and I don't think that was quite what you were asking. I don't know if/how the **** comes off the rod
Don't think the **** is designed to come off the rod. It's pressed/swedged/glued on. As JerryP58 said, there is a release button on the switch. It's small. You push it in, hold it, and then pull the rod out. Chuck
