Been awhile since I was up here.
I like to hang down at pr&c…….
But this week, our 81's turn sig fuse blows as soon as I turn the key while the lever is in the turn position.
Stuck a 30a in, same prob.
New sig flasher as well.
Haz lights work, and is on a separate circuit.
Did'nt see a diagram in Wilcox's area.
What to do now?
Clean up the bulkhead connector behind the fuse panel on the other side of the firewall. Disconnect it, clean it up, put it back together. Very well could fix your problem and probably needs to be done anyways.
Dang, that was a pain.
Got the car off the ground, removeded that 5/16 bolt holding it together.
came right off. it I remember doing this back 20 years ago and greased it with that elec grease stuff.
Volt test from all males to females. and stuck it back together. Tried it again.....
Nope. (It was worth a shot though).
How about I go for the simple things first, and get to the hard stuff later. I was hoping for easy things you guys have done.
Cars still in the air...………..
If you're going to do electrical on a C3, get the big plastic wiring diagram with all the circuits colored. It's all of $19 and I've used mine quite a bit. Also, for $88, get a Power Probe 3 from Amazon with the case and extension. No better tool can be had for figuring out what's going on. A lot of video's out there and it makes electrical troubleshooting far, far easier. Sounds like you have a short circuit if you're blowing the fuse, either inside the steering column or somewhere in the engine compartment or body. $88 for the Power Probe, or you can spend hours and hours trying to track down the problem.
Mine went yesterday on the ‘72. Btn replacing the fuse on the driver’s side and the signal switch up under the passenger side dash it at least gave my wife and a neighbor a laugh and me a bit of a sore back.
I have an older unit somewhat similar to the Power Probe, a great tool to have.
Misery loves company...………...
That power testers cool. Bet I'd find the short in a sec. In the mean time, I guess I'll get a long wire to the probe and get back at it.
Going to suck if I have to get into the steering.
I've been tempted to order that poster diagram. Saw it before.
I think now is time if you intend to keep you c3 forever.
It's up to you, buddy! You're going to have to get that schematic, at the very least a multimeter and better yet, a Power Probe and start figuring it out. Rarely is anything easy about electrical, that's for sure.

Try disconnecting the harmonica connection and see if the fuse still blows.
If it does not blow disconnect the PURPLE wire at 'L" from the lower harness and plug the harmonica connection back it and post your results.
Separated the harmonica connector attached under the steering column. Bang...pop another fuse when I turn the sig lever.
Dang, this things getting power elsewhere.

That's an interesting result.
Tell me again: You replaced the fuse and with the key ON the fuse stayed good until you move the turn signal lever up or down and then the fuse blew. Yes?
Since the back-up lights are powered by the same fuse what if you have the key on with a good fuse and move the shifter to reverse?
Does the wire from the horn relay power-up that fuse?
Any recent work done at the horn relay or the horn?
I need to revise that.
The fuse blows then I turn the key to the run pos. Regardless of signal levers position.
pos is exactly what this thing is right now...………..
Got to ask, do you have a multimeter at the very least? You can unplug and plug wires all day long, but until you get a multimeter or better yet, a $88 Power Probe 3, you're going to spend a lot of time experimenting. I'd bet that you have at least two to three hours into this. What's your time worth? Once you get the schematic, along with these tools, you'll be able to run down the wire or the circuit and figure out what's really going on. Just my .02.
