I have a 1976 stingray. The speedometer quit working. So I did the usual things. Replaced the cable, checked the gear. From the transmission forward everything is working good. But the speedometer it self is not working. Any good advice from here forward to check. Thanks

Check cable fit on the rear of the speedo.

Yes I checked it twice... just to make sure it was on there good. Because it's a pain to get to. But it seems to be on good.

disconnect the cable from the tranny, then put your drill in reverse and drive the cable with the drill... see if it works.

You could have a bad drive gear in the tranny and not a driven gear issue but this is one way to eliminate it.

If checking things with the drill shows that there is no issue up to the transmission, I would suspect that the plastic gear is worn even though it may look ok visually. That was my experience with my 74'. I just put on a new plastic gear ( must get the right color plastic gear) and everything worked fine. Note: The plastic gear is mated with a steel gear inside of the transmission.

Just to let ya know...I tried the drill trick...and it worked. As it run I pushed on the cable a little bit. And it started to work. So the new cable must have needed to go in a little further. Now it's all back together again and working. Thank you to everyone that responded with ideas. That is a huge help. Thank you
