i proudly bought my first Corvette (1970 350cu 350hp L46 4 speed manual) just yesterday in germany so far I am very happy with the car. I knew that the reverse gear is known to be hard or "brutally" shifted but it is extremely loud and sounds very uncomfortable for the gearbox. First question, is that really normal? Second question if it´s normal is their any way (except of shifting in second before) to avoid this torture for the gearbox?
I recognized that this problem also occurs after starting the engine with the clutch fully disengaged. But how is that possible? in this case the gearbox should be disconnected from the engine? am I wrong?
If you have the owners manual, it states the car should go into a forward gear before attempting to engage reverse due to the lack of a synchronized reverse gear.
Do you have approximately 1.5" of free play on the clutch pedal when pressing down with your finger tips? If not the clutch needs adjusting.
My clutch is out of adj. 2 nuts surround a union ...... loosen the nuts ......... set the clutch. The clutch pedal felt tight , it didn't return like it always did...... BOOM .... the clip between the clutch rod and the clutch pedal breaks. The rod twixt the linkage bell crank and the clutch pedal has a bend . If you tighten the rod with a bias that stresses the clip at the pedal ....BOOM ........ the middle finger [how appropriate] breaks. Mission impossible to replace. Set the clutch leaving the nuts semi tight ; press the clutch several times to neutralize the tension on the rod ; then tighten the nuts. Used a hitch clip as a replacement. So far so good .
