Default Dewitt radiator fan fuse

The fuse for my single Spal fan melted yesterday. Anyone know of a reason that would cause this?

You need a new fuse holder. The inside of the holder was not tight on the fuse spades, creating resistance and heat. The hotter it got, the looser the fit. .

Thank you Sir, all has been replaced, installed a 30 amp fuse. I believe that is what is supposed to be in there but not sure.

I'm not a fan ( no pun intended) of the splice /connector in-line fuse for high current applications

I like the Delphi waterproof one- half the number of connections- as the wires are crimped inside the sealed connector

I used those weather pack connectors all over my Cobra build. They are much better. I have switched over most of the Vette to those where needed also. Little pricier but well worth it in the long run.

Tom does spal sell a controller for their fans? (for now a single)
the 200 on switch is too warm for me, the 185 on pretty much runs all the time.

When I was replacing my fuel sending unit I was looking for an OEM plug to match the 82 FSU, I stumbled across this site http://terminalsupplyco.com/

Tom with dual fans is it best to have 2 relays, fuses so theres not too much load on wiring?
Soft start type option?

A fan that runs all the time is not good. It will shorten the life of the fan and unless you use a continuous use relay you run the risk of melting the relay possibly starting a fire. You may need a better fan or radiator, my fans used to stay on all the time and it did start melting the relay. I upgraded the fan, relay and radiator. My current set up is on/off 200/190 to allow for the fan to shut off at speed.

I'm using a PWM.... soft start and varies the speed due to temperature- that's what the new cars run...then there is the brushless fans that are also more efficient...

Sort of like putting two solenoids on your starter - thinking that will fix a hot start problem...

The other issue is not enough voltage at idle- as the alternator is not putting out full output at the slower RPM when the fans are most likely kicking on... a better alternator or smaller pulley might be needed.

And the wire- GM scrimped on the size of the wire to save money...so bigger wire certainly will help.

If there was any easy fix...

OLD/LAZY/CHEEP ET here, so soldering a wire is nothing to me, wire direct off alt stud, soldered to a blade fuse large orange thing...30 or 40 amp, and then up/over to the relay that the computer turns off, setting on top of rad shroud......fans grounded to frame and sealed with RTV so no corrosion.....

grenade proof.....

And that is why I standardized on the 195on/175off, because you can actually get to 175.

Sometimes I think this is all psychological and we should call or switch the 175 off, sounds colder doesn't?

Tom I meant the 185 on/165 off switch have one of those too (never gets to 165) dont want this getting to 200 before it turns on in the first place; it tends to do the heat soak bit meaning sitting there longer to come down than if it came on 10 deg sooner
Ill give this single spal one more chance and try a controller before it gets chitcanned.

Rich do you have a link for that controller? Or does spal make one thats more compatible?

Like the soft start feature. Pulleys were sized right by Chris Jones, idle speed so that ought to be Ok. Denso 80/120
