Default Starter problem

The starter has been making a grinding sound when it starts the engine of my '74. I've cleaned all the terminals on the battery and the starter motor. Bought a new solenoid due the bakelite top cracking and it was only a little more expensive to buy the whole solenoid than to just buy the bakelite top. Anyway saw the post by patg86 'Do I have a bad stater solenoid?' This is exactly the noise my vet makes. sstocker31 replied with a video about shimming the starter. Had a look at the clearance and it was more than 1/8 inch. Took shims out and got it back to 1/8 inch. Now there is no grinding, but the starter won't stop turning the engine over even with the key turned off. Have to disconnect the battery to stop it. If I take the 'S' wire off the starter and turn the key I get 12.5v and it returns to 0 with in second of turning the key off. I presume its binding some how and is 1/8 inch to close?

now you probably need an entire solenoid (or spring).

ensure the starter drive (aka bendix) slides freely on shaft & spring returns it.

It works fine on the bench and returns normally, just not in the car

It sounds like your starter needs shimmed.

Are ALL teeth on both bendix and flexplate/flywheel in good condition?

Teeth all there and in reasonable condition on the bendix and the flexplate. Is the 1/8 inch space between the flexplate and the bendix shaft the right distance or should it be larger
