Default Muncie M-20 Rebuild

Greetings. I have begun going through a few things on this Vette of mine since inheriting it a few years back. I am about to pull my M-20 from the car and have a few questions. Why you ask? I have the engine out, which has been rebuilt so I figured I may as well go through the transmission. It pops out of first gear intermittently. Other than that it shifts okay. Plus the speedometer cog isn't cogging. I am mechanically inclined and plan to go through it myself.
1. Is this rebuild a task better left to a professional?
1a. If yes, does anyone know of a reputable manual transmission shop in middle GA or Atlanta?
2. Are special tools required?
3. Is Ecklers the best place to get a rebuild kit?

Thanks for your insight.

Good advice to look at Pauls, 5speeds.com, videos. I have used his master kits and they are quality parts, Paul will also help you out over the phone. He has a good book and had an old tape, not sure if it's online or not but that would really help you. A press helps and the thin wrench for the gland nut, also good snap ring pliers- the flat face type not the ring type.

These are simple and easy to rebuild. You need a press to make it easy getting the rear bearing and the speedometer cog off the shaft. Watch all Pauls videos. He has a ton of videos and lots of information. Lots of do's and don'ts I bought some parts from himand some from thegearbox

I used some of the new improved parts to make the rebuild even simpler. I got alot of my parts from the gearbox as well as 5speeds.com. My tranny has been running great

Good videos. I need to replace my speedo drive gear since it snapped in half, but it's the plastic version. I'd like to replace it with the earlier steel gear but it's slightly narrower in width. Anyone had success using one?

One of Pauls videos mentions just that upgrade. He talks about the draw backs of the plastic gear and how it fails all the time

Before I went thru my m20, I had never had one apart. Watch Paul's videos, buy his book, and unlike me, who didn't know about Paul's parts, buy his parts.
You will need a press and some special tools, but that is not a real deal breaker. Harbor freight press is cheap, and the glan nut wrench is too.
I rather enjoyed the experience after I got over my apprehension. The parts are smaller and lighter than the 9, 10, 13, 15, and 18 speed transmissions that I have worked on.
Piece of cake.

I have overhauled a few. I have used Pauls parts, tools and his Supercase and they are all top shelf. Be sure to order his pilot bushing when you make the order. Correct ones are hard to come by so I usually buy a spare while I am at it.

Your 1-2 synchronizer slider is probably worn internally where the first gear clutch teeth ride. Popping out of gear when you get off and back on the gas is the symptom of that. The tiny clutch teeth on first gear can also be worn and contribute the the problem.

Reverse gear always looks bad because it is not synchronized but usually can be reused. Need to see it first.

Thanks. Here's a side-by-side view of the two.

This is a very easy process to do as other have explained. Do you need a press - No - Paul shows how to rebuild a transmission with hand tools. A press makes the job a whole lot easier. I have a couple suggestions. The transmission has needle bearings in a couple locations. Instead of the individual needle bearings get the caged bearings. Makes the job go a lot faster and easier. Make sure you get the special bushing for first gear. this provides better lubrication than the original. If you intend to push the car in the future, there even a bearing rather than a bushing for the first gear.
One of the better places to get parts is from Auto Gear as well as from Paul. I got my parts from Auto Gear as they have the specialty stuff, Paul might just not sure.
