How restrictive are stock mufflers?

Default How restrictive are stock mufflers?

I am going to lose the factory cat converter and go duels (cats and mufflers). Are the factory style mufflers restrictive or should I go aftermarket?

Get rid of those stock mufflers. There has been a lot of improvements in the last 23 years in regards to mufflers. Flowmasters, Borla's, Ravin's, just to name a few.

The formula for required exhaust flow is: horsepower times 2.2.
So if your car makes 400 hp, you will need a total of 880 cfm muffler capacity for an unrestrictive exhaust system. So for dual exhaust, you would need mufflers that flow 440 cfm.
For reference, a 2.5 inch diameter pipe flows ~500 cfm. Adding non-mandrel bends will lessen that amount.

Question- assuming a 2.5" diameter pipe flows ~500 cfm, how does a Dynomax Ultra Flow flow so well? The UF only has 1000 cfm, and obviously the flow in is no greater than the flow out.
