I just bought an electric choke conversion kit for my divorced style choke from http://www.carbs.net/quadrajet.asp . It looks like a quality unit and mounts where the old bi-metal spring and cover were on the intake. Has anyone used this unit and if so what do you think of it?
John
It has arrived and it is a quality unit. I will have to mod the linkage (read bend) a little because I am installing it on a ZZ4 and the intake choke pad is a little higher than a stock manifold. I will be installing it either tonight or this weekend (last night was my wife's birthday so I didn't dare last night). It is a very easy installation and should take only an hour or so other than setup and tuning. I have a detached garage with no heat and last night it got down to 28, so I guess I need to buy a heater so I can work this winter (I lived in Austin the last 8 years so that was not a problem before). I'll keep everyone posted on the results and attach some pictures as soon as my website is back up.

Can't give you input on the specific unit you bought....
However, from a lessons learned standpoint. I've been fighting an electric choke problem on a Holley Street Avenger. I tied it into the original power source for the stock electric fan on my 79', which read 12 volts. Turns out that power source could not hold the load, therefore my choke was malfunctioning due to inadequate power. Tied it into the fuseblock last night, amazing how well things run when there working correctly.
Anyway, verify and double check your power source.
John,
I'll be interested in seeing how that thing works out, post some pictures of how you mount it to the ZZ-4 manifold. I'm still fighting with which carb to use on my ZZ-4. At this time I have 2 junky Q-jets, a Holley Spreadbore double pumper 650 with an electric choke and a Holley Q-jet replacement. I'd like to use the Holley Double pumper, but I am having a prioblem finding a air cleaner base that will fit on the darned thing.

No problem there. My computer crashed last night and I am just now recovering from that. I am probally heading out to the garage right after dinner to start installation of it. I'll let you know haw it turns out and send some pictures your way.
Dave - Thanks for the advice, that will save me a few headaches I hope. I am planning to take the +12V off the horn relay but if I have any weird stuff going on the I am going to the battery.
John
Be sure it is a switched circuit, only hot when the key is on. You probably already knew this, but I thought I'd post it because it's always the simple stuff that screws me up! Good luck.
The harness came with the unit and it has fairly good instructions. There is a thermostat that you bolt to the intake besides the unit in the pictures. It controls the movement of the selonoid and starts to open the choke at around 100 degrees. The harness comes off the thermostat and has two wires, one goes to a switched 12 volts and the other goes to battery 12 volts.

Re: Electric Choke (theandies)
Timely reply here. Thanks for the heads up on where not to get the 12volts from. I am just getting ready to put the hot wire to my electric choke here in the next few days. Hopefully this thing will work easily for me also. BTW I have a Street Avenger with the electric choke.
just wondering why you are switching over to the electric choke? i'm thinking i've got a choke problem. i've been having starting problems with my 79 lately, past month or 2 (colder weather). it'll crank all day long to the point where it floods out. wait a little while and she'll fire up. sounds like my choke (?).
davs79 - I don't know if you know what a divorced style choke is but 99% of the time it didn't work so I would have to crank my car 5 and 6 time to get it to run while cold. I wanted a more reliable choke system and didn't want to install a manual push/pull cable. When working correctly and adjusted right you can't beat the reliability of an electric unit IMHO.
thejaf - This is the unit to buy. It was a very easy install and worked the first time. I don't know how your intake choke pad is setup but when I installed my ZZ4 about 2+ years ago I had to buy an adapter plate from Edlebrock that installs on the intake to make the choke pad flat (the ZZ4 intake had a hot air blank plate that was at a 45 degree angle to the original intakes flat pad. This adaptor is a little taller than the original intakes choke pad so I had to modify the linkage (read shorten) a little to make it fit.
I am going to post pictures and maybe do a tech tip for anyone interested as soon as my home page is fixed (MODS????????  )
EDIT - My home page is working now Thanks MODS :yesnod:
Any question? IM me or e-mail. If you want pictures, I can e-mail them to you if you desire. Here is the link to Carbs Unlimited. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and the unit I bought is the very last item on the page. http://www.carbs.net/quadrajet.asp
Here is a picture of my old divorced style choke and the Edlebrock pad I was talking about above.
