Default Broken dipstick tube extraction

I suppose this happened to many of us.

From whay I can tell, this was once a chrome tube. Flashing a light down there and it seems to be resting on a shoulder in the block. I tried pulling it out with a screw and tapping it out with a chisel.

I am going to buy some needle nose vice-grips and try with that.

Would collapsing the tube a bit help ?

yeah, vice grips or a big ol' pair of channel locks might get it.

This happened to another last winter. The posts went on for days. I don't remember what the solution was but maybe someone else can find the thread.

Sit tight for a day or so and see who responds. You don't want to break it off flush with the block.

Edit: I just remembered. I believe they bought a Vice Grip with a sliding hammer on the handle. Very clever. The tool was used for rivet removal. Don't know who sells it.

Stick a bolt in it and clamp vise grips on it. Then hit the vise grips from below with a hammer.

for a small block you can usually take a 3/8 (fine thread is better) bolt and thread it into what's left (grind a chamfer onto the end of the bolt helps get it started) and then pry it out or use a long bolt / all-thread and make a slide hammer type thing with whatever you have handy

I'd also stuff something (wheel grease?) into the pipe to prevent anything from going into the pan

Guilty as charged.

I could not swing a hammer hard enough and at the right angle from below with the car on the floor so unless you have access to a lift or ramps don't bother getting under the car.

I actually went through this twice in a matter of weeks.

I got the first one out by crushing the tube with vice grips then threading in a slide hammer into the end of the vice grips. It took quite a while to crush the tube but it worked. However......

I Then I decided I didn't like the tube I put in because it didn't look assembly line correct and I tried to pull it out with my slide hammer and it just ripped it apart at the block. Here I go again.

This time I just found a bolt that threaded into the broken tube, clamped the vice grips/slide hammer on the bolt and I had it out 5 minutes after I broke it.

I'll post pictures as soon as read some bedtime stories.

Right now.

How nice I literally pulled it out and put it in a bucket. Never bothered to even take the bolt out.

If you want to go this route I can tell you how make one from hardware store parts.

Thanks gents. This helps a lot. I ordered a couple of vice grips. (Amazingly I don’t own any ) I feel confident with this feedback I’ll be able to extract the broken tube.

I’ll attempt again on Wednesday when the pliers come in.

Stay tuned.

Bought a tiny pair of vice grips. I had my son hold it steady and, getting under the car, I tapped it out with an extra long drift. It took me 30 seconds.
