Thank you. I am always open to learn. I guess the article I posted the link to was misinformation.

Agree that comp 268 is a good cam for your use. I had a mild 76 L82 with AT and went with an Isky 264 mega cam with 214-214 dur @ 050 .450 .450 lift on a 108 lsa . Had lots of low and mid range power, better than the l82 cam. Similar to the comp 268, but I prefer Isky over Comp.

Lots of errors & omissions in that ... e.g. it ain't even close to 10.2:1 CR ... e.g. both my base '71 L48 have OE dual snorkel air cleaner assemblies

Probably most accurate source of published OE data for 1980 (and other years) is straight from the horses mouth ... GM ... and it ain't perfect either

A nice running cam setup is one based on the L79 350-horse 327. This is one of the best-running Chevy hydraulic-cammed engines ever produced when running the stock heads. When the 350 replaced the 327, GM designated the new hi perf 350 the "L46," which also put out 350 hp. This L46 cam is the same as the L82, and is almost identical to the L79. However, the L46 cam was revised with much better cam lobe dynamics, making it potentially a better cam than the L79. Unfortunately, they ground the cam lobes on a 114-degree intake centerline instead of the L79 110-degree spec. If you use an adjustable timing gear set, such as the Cloyes C3023X (or similar), you can use the L46 cam and simply advance it 4 degrees to achieve the L79 110-degree centerline. This is a great setup for a mild street engine, offering outstanding bottom-end torque and power through the usable rpm range of the heads. The L46 cam is available from Federal-Mogul under part number CS1095R, available through any NAPA store or Summit Racing (with lifters HT817). This cam will produce a "performance" exhaust note and idle while still producing enough vacuum to operate the power brakes and headlights.

Lars

L79 versus L46/L82 cam specs (duration @ .050"):

L79 Hydr. Lifter (327/350 hp) 222/222° .447”/.447” 110° Centerline
L46 Hydr. Lifter (350/350 hp) & L82 222/222° .450”/.460” 114° Centerline
Lars,

I wish I hadn't read this.... I'm tempted to redo my cam.

The engine is still on the test stand with approx 40 min run time to break in the cam. Wouldn't be much $$$ or effort to swap to L46/L79/L82 if worth while performance gain.
Pretty much a stock rebuild:

71 L48, .030 over, flat tops, 461 heads with 2.02/1.60, ram horns with 2.5 conversion, stock intake, Q-jet and dizzy rebuilt by you, TH400 with stock converter and 3.08,
Current cam is CS274.
Is there much to gain by changing just the cam or better to leave it alone?

Thanks,
Jim

What you have is essentially a stock cam, but yes the GM cam is a big step up. I like the 264 Isky as Jim stated also. Smaller but makes better tq imo

CS 274 is a 1:1 sealed power replacement for OE L48 cam ... same specs. ... You're probably at about 10:1 CR w/ flattops & 461 heads ... IMO, you could use more cam.
