Just finished installing a Goodwrench create motor to which I had added XE 262 cam, Edelbrock Aluminum heads, manifold and Carb. When I started it up for the first time, the headers (ceramic coated Hooker side pipes) glowed orange within 5 minutes. Timing is right on ,vacuum advance is disconnected, Carb screws are out 3 turns, radiator is full. The block and heads don't feel hot, and the thermostat hasn't opened yet. Temp gage only reads 110. Any ideas? The super hot pipes make me nervous.
I would make sure that you have anti-freeze/water in the block..... The way that the lower radiator hose is bent upward could mean that there isn't any water going in the block- hard for water to travel up that bend.
I would take the thermostat housing off when it is cooled off to check......
79vette is on the money its running lean. We use cause this condition to clean the o2 sensors in the gm dealerships. Check for vacuum leaks or maybe a port that should be pluged.
I put the original Q-jet carb back on and the headers still got hot. Pulled the manifold off but couldn't see anything unusual like a bad gasket. Is it possible that both the old stock 78' Q-jet and Edelbrock (600 cfm) carbs are jeted to lean for this engine combination?
Anything's possible ... carbs too lean ... even the timing may be fooling you. Did you use your old harmonic balancer? ... maybe its ring has slipped & timing mark is off.
When I filled my cooling system, I didn't put the thermostat in for the initial start-up. I've had problems in the past with air pockets in the cooling system keeping the thermostat from opening and letting the engine the engine heat up way too much. Usually it will pop open, but not always quickly.
I agree with the others ------- sounds like it's running way too lean ----
Carb or timing --- check all possibilities ! Rick :chevy
in a darker room a faint orange glow for the first 6 inches or so of pipe is normal.....if engine is running say 2000 rpm.....
if at idle...say 6-800 rpm....about 2 inches is about all the orange you can get....now at highway speeds, they will turn yellow/orange....hotter yet....
sounds normal to me....
but if you see orange in a well lit room/outside....well correct, it could be too lean....
