Default Organic Brake Pads

I could use some help in deciding on a new set of brake pads for my '77. I'm not so interested in "high performance" type as I am in a pad which will minimize the wear on my still original rotors. I've come to understand that that would be an organic type pad. A higher performance organic pad would be nice, if such a thing exists. Can anyone help me out with a brand recommendation?

Wagner organic always seemed to behave best all around on st cars, high performance type pads not so much.

I use Hawk street pads in my 66 and 68. No noise, no dust with normal rotor wear. Great performance. Jerry

Ceramic pads are rotor friendly and will not fade like organics can do if they get too hot.

Organic pads. As long as they lock up all 4's, they're ok for my street needs.

I'll just say it depends on what you're doing. I ran a set of organic pads that came in one of those $300 kits in the mid 90's. Sleeved calipers, new master cylinder, new rubber and short steel lines and 2 qts of silicone fluid. I ran them for years and they worked great. Now understand I was street driving it and using it at the drag strip...which meant O was regularly hauling it down from 140+ MPH at the end of the strip. What I liked about them was they always worked the first time you hit them. Not like a race type pad that gets better as it heats up and makes you pucker a little on the first hit because they are cold. I only made them fade once and that's when I ran 3 back to back 140+ MPH passes without even shutting the engine off. That last one made them smell a little! LOL.

I installed a set of Wilwood calipers and pads as part of a project and when I pulled the old ones I found there was still at least half the lining left. The Wilwoods stop great too..but the pads are wearing faster. (Of course I'm going a little faster now days too).

If it's your cruiser/driver...I'd use a normal quality pad..it will likely out last you.

Thanks all. Ordered a set of ACDelco organics from Rock Auto. I'm checking out the calipers etc anyway to try to find out why the car's pulling to the left again when braking. Might as well throw a new set of pads on while I'm at it. Corrected the issue I had with it pulling left a couple of months ago by replacing the internally collapsed flex lines. Started doing it again now though, although not as bad. Hoping that it's pad related but we'll see.

Default AC/Delco backing plate?

The AC/Delco pads come with an extra piece behind the backing plate that is not there on the existing pads (1973). Should that extra piece stay on or go away?

It should stay, That will silence the pads if they vibrate. Just be gentle for the first road test, don't hit the brakes too hard. Get them warm through a short trip, then let them cool, After that, you're good to go.

I have been through exactly what you are doing. I tried the "organic" pads. I didn't think they stopped my car worth a darn. Ceramic are supposed to stop real well when they get hot. When you are just driving around town the brakes never really get "HOT". I finally tried HAWK HPS pads. They stop the car very well. It is the first time I can slide the tires when I slam on the brakes. I also bench bleed the calipers to make sure ALL the air is out of them. This made my pedal very firm. I have never had a pad that was noisy.

If you do regular driving, organics are OK. Are they the best? No. Metallic are good, but they make a lot of dust and are rough on rotors. Ceramics are newer technology.
They seem to work better. Like I said, unless you're doing some serious heavy driving, you'll get by with organics.

Thank you. I figured that, but it never hurts to ask.

Good luck with the job! BTW, are you flushing out the old brake fluid?

I used the AC delco organic ones too. I am still happy with them 10 years later.

I've owned my '80 since it was new. I've never used anything other than organic on it. At 90,000 miles the rotors were still well within spec. As for stopping power, it was primo from the day I bought the car. If I hit the brakes at 80 mph and held them just off locking up to a dead stop the deceleration would literally give you a head rush. Now, I'm not claiming they are as good as ceramics when hot and common sense says they won't. But for street driving and the occasional fun on a winding road, they are fine, and you'll still have your original rotors, as I do.
