The best are original axles that are not worn. Most of the original 63-70 are still good after 100k miles. 71-72 are spotty, 73-79 are soft. I don't even bother with 80-82.
International Axle has a good axle although it costs a lot more.
I have not seen, in hand, a new axle I liked. They may be out there but the ones I have seen were pretty poor.
I have been kicking around the idea of machining my own tips but I still have stock on the rebuilt ones. Once those are correctly fit I haven't had any issue with, I'm just curious what you guys were doing. Many of you do this once and done so maybe you are not seeing what I and others have seen or more importantly recognizing it?

Very informative information. Thank you for posting.
To answer your question of what we guys are doing, here is my tale of woe.
I had my '81 model rear end reworked. It required new axles. I have been driving it for a few years now. The alignment shop showed me the 12 to 6 o'clock play on the rear wheels.
I heard that there was a bad run of axles about the time that mine was rebuilt. Any truth to that?
Now I've got to pull the rear end out.
I need to have an experienced mechanic rebuild it with axles that may or may not even fit.
GEESH!

Mike Dyer is the 81 wizard. Gary won't touch them.
What are your thoughts on Duntov's Super Duty Stub Axles? A few years ago (3K miles ago) I purchased and installed Duntov's HD threaded Stub axles and guess what they're both worn. 1/4 to 1/2 inch end play.
My originals broke, off whom can I buy some decent Stub Axles?
Thanks
