I just bought this 78 corvette from a local store. It does not appear to have on any aftermaket parts, but the air filter is pressed up against the inside of the hood. Is this normal? If not could the problem be?
Yes, the intake is aluminum but is says GM on it, would they make an upgraded manifold that hood require a new hood or a drop base air filter? Thanks for the replies
sorry, that requires a new hood or a drop base air filter
I use a pretty extreme drop base air filter setup and it works great.. I use a 1 1/4 inch drop base with a 2 1/4 inch K&N filter.. However - for this combo it is recommended to shave off the choke tower to get more air flow into the primaries...

Is your Air filter the original single or dual snorkle setup or is it open element? - unless that aluminum manifold is a high rise GM part there should be no issue with hood clearance. It is entirely possible that a high rise LT-1 style manifold was installed if this is the case you might have clearance problems.
If the carb is still the Q-jet - I would not mill the choke horn but instead would investigate other drop base air cleaners.
is shaving off the choke tower an easy task? Would you recommend doing this to the tower if you didnt have this modification?
Initially - I actually got a new main body without choke tower for my carb. Now I'm running a chokeless (also no choke tower) racing carb... Shaving the choke tower can be done with some drill inserts to grind down the tower... Well - it could be a couple of hours of work, but it's not a difficult task...
When comparing the height of the manifold to others it does not look like it could be a high rise manifold. I did find out that the guy before me cut out a hole in the previous hood so he could show off the air cleaner. Now for him to do this wouldnt that require him to something with the height of the engine. Is it possible that the engine is mounted to high?
Is it possible that there is a carb spacer is there, or how tall is the filter element? Is it possible that the hood isn't correct for a '78, since it isn't original? perhaps from an earlier long hood c3 with a lower profile. Just tossing out some ideas.
