The filler cap on my '79 winds up directly below the lowest point of the alternator bracket where it's damned near impossible to remove/replace the cap because of the built-in dipstick. Just replaced the original pump and hoses after a minor leak became disastrous. This is the only belt original to my purchase because it was the newest and in best condition.
The pump is nearly at the driver side end of the adjustment bracket.
Did someone use a belt that's too long because the proper one wasn't immediately available?
I now feel like a hypocrite for this https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...o-ruin-it.html
reply about replacing ALL belts and hoses without a nice service record.
I'd give photos if were in any way capture what I see.
I had the same problem with my 79 L82. Went to oriellys auto and bought 3 belts smaller than the original one. Found the best fit so I could remove the cap and returned the other belts.
yeah, on my 79, just as you say, the cap is directly below the alternator and mine is definitely hard to remove. Hadn't thought of replacing belts to move both components a little.
From: Arlington Va Current ride 04 vert, previous vettes: 69 vert, 77 resto mod
just make a new dip stick........out of a piece of metal. so that you can undo the top and push it to the side and then use this fabricated dipstick that has a step shoulder on on to measure the fluid. it would look like the side of a stair.....with a long rise to measure the fluid and the tread would be to rest on the top of the reservoir and the next rise is what you hold.
then out your fill marks on it with a flat chisel

It's not the alternator itself that's in the way, its the immovable support bracket below it. Moving the alternator won't help. Haven't yet picked up the suggested belt but intend to do so soon. Will report back after I do.
Correct, the ALT location is fine. Either get the Gates belt mentioned above or take your old one to NAPA and ask for one an inch shorter?
When I first bought my Vette, I could not remove the PS pump cap. Now I can do it blindfolded, with one hand easily. There is a knack to it. You learn this knack because of adding PS fluid every week. AGGHHHHH!!
(Going to fix that one of these days)
