I'm sick and tired of these cheesy disount auto store alternator brackets that work with headers. I have tried the no-name and then the chrome Mr. Gasket. The first one broke and now this one is slowly bending....making the belt squeal. I've seem some of the cool billet ones but sell for over $100. Do any of you know of a good, inexpensive bracket? This is the best deal I've found so far: http://www.zigsstreetrods.com/Pages/brackets.html
I'm speaking of the bare steel bracket for $84.95.
Thanks
Get an alum one from a vette parts vendor, it bolts flat to the front of the driver's side head. Also get the upper bracket because it shaped a little diff than those one you get at the parts store. I think they are about $60 total together.
I believe you need the 'brace' and 'bracket' for the 2nd design. I can check the part number on mine at lunch but it is alum so I think it is the 2nd design bracket.
They make 2 different models of the later C-3 Alternator bracket, one is cast iron and the other is cast aluminum. I bought the cast aluminum one, it was more expensive than the cast iron one, but it looks better than the cast iron one would next to my aluminum heads, on my ZZ-4. You'll also need the top brace as the old type probably won't work. Check the Zip catalog pages and you'll see both types listed.
The Aluminum one looks pretty good and is a "Genuine GM Reproduction Part"

The one from ZIP propably wouldn't work for me... They are setup to put the alternator in the correct location for a Corvette setup.. However - my engine doesn't have any Corvette parts... only chevy parts.. so I need a Non-Corvette bracket... I'm sick of my alternator brackets breaking... :mad
Short and simple.
I installed headers over 30 years ago.
I used a GM CAST steel bracket that bolts to the head.
No other parts required. Used existing top brace, pulleys/belts lined up fine.
Been working for over 30 years.
That's like the one I bought from Zip, it came with a GM Parts number and sticker, so I guess it is probably still available from a Chevy dealer. One thing is, it won't work with 69 ramshorn manifolds that had the old style alternator mount that bolted to the manifold. It should work fine with headers since it has no involvement with the headers at all.
I was in Autozone today and saw an alternator mount made by Spectre (?) it was a chrome plated two piece affair, that looked pretty solid. I have no idea how well it would work, it looked more substantial that the other ones I've seen in the parts stores.
