I have a 1968 327 with PS/PB and AC. The last time I changed the belts was 1990. At that time I completely removed the PS pump and rebuilt it. Nothing is leaking now and I don't want to remove the pump, just change the belt. I loosened the bolt that has the sliding adjustment but, of course, the pump won't swivel. I see two mounting bolts into the block and am guessing you remove one completely and just loosen the other. The manuals I have didn't cover belt replacement, just pump removal and re-installation. I'm OK with the AC and alternator belts but need some guidance on the PS belt. Thanks.
You may want to check the back side of the pump for a stud and nut. There should also be a bolt at the bottom of pump that allows it to pivot on the mount. You do not have to remove the pump to change the belt. Jerry
No need to touch those two bolts into the block--they won't let the pump swivel as they're just some of the fasteners that hold the mounting bracket. You'll find a nut on the back side of the pump installed on a stud that goes through the adjustment slot. Loosen it.
As I recall, things looked a lot easier to get at from below. Do you have ramps?
When you are ready to tighten up the new belt, jamb a long piece of one by two wood between the pump and block for a pry bar. The wood will not damage the pump. When you have reached the right tension with one hand, snug the adjustment bolt with the other hand first. Then go underneath and tighten the pivot bolt / nut.
Double check deflection of the belt between pulleys.
On my '79 accessing that nut from above is extremely difficult (I gave up)--it's hard to even see. FAR easier with the driver front wheel removed and the driver side on jack stands.
Thanks for all the advice. I will jack up the front end and try again. Years ago when I removed the pump the front end was on jack stands and that was probably what made it an easy job. Thanks again.
