Default QUESTION ON LIFTER

BTW are the homepages still down? Noticed my pic still shows X. Still cannot login to homepage

Okay anyway I heard a slight tap from #6 intake but could not discern using my stehescope which usually lets me know right off the bat which lifter needs adjustment? I removed the valve cover and took three 1/10 turns on the roller rocker (GOD THEY STILL LOOK GREAT! SUMMIT BILLET ROCKERS) and reinstalled the cover and the tap is still there. Could it be a exhaust leak? I've heard of exhaust leaks that mimic loose rockers but I don't think this is the case. Going to come home after work and pull the valve cover again and adjust using the #1 or #6 TDC adjustment method as per my manual just to be sure I did not over tighten the rocker and cause a bind that bends the push rod/ wears down the lobe/ piston to valve hit (very unlikely cause I didn't hear it when it ran afterwards) but just to be safe.
Well before I open her back up let me know if you have any ideas. I've heard that lifters sometimes go bad, oil hole gets clogged, unlikely, or inner spring fails, unlikely. Engine is fresh <1000 miles and all new CC cam/ CC lifters, SUMMIT roller rockers etc. Never had to make any adjustments before.

REQUEST YOUR ADVICE BEFORE I DO ANYTHING ELSE.

David

Yes exhaust leaks can mimmick valve taps. Exhaust leaks are heard most when underload like accelerating and the like. Then when you let off or are cruisin lightly they quiet down considerably. Valve taps are usually more consistant in making noise whether engine is under load or not. Definatly check for exhaust leaks first. Then try and narrow down where and if you have a valve tap. Check for bent pushrods. Are the roller rockers you are using actually needle bearing rockers? Some rockers reported to be true rollers are not in that they use a bushing to pivot on rather than needle bearings. Check all the rockers for play in the fulcrum. wiped cam lobe is also a posibility. Which comp cam are you using? if you have a wiped lobe that rocker arm will move up and down much less, if any at all compared to the others. You can run the engine for a few momments with the valve cover off and see which one is wiped if its bad enough. You may have one begining to do so. Even if it is a single lifter gone bad which is unlikely, you will need to replace entire cam and lifters. Lifters usuall get shroomed out on the bottom due to wiped cam lobe. Also with engine running and valve cover off check to verify that oil is pumping from all of the rockers. There may be an oil hole plugged. Im not sure but I guess it might be possible to install the rockers incorectly and block an oil passage. I know this can happen on engines with rocker arm shafts but not sure with typical roller rockers. Hope this helps some. I had a Comp Cams XE268 that wiped a lobe with low miles. Never did find out why. I since have down graded to the XE262. I like the 262 better. Smoother in gear idle and a bit better bottom end. It was the difference between being able to spin a little tire and not.

If you have also noticed a slight miss that showed up about the same time, check for a broken or cracked spring! If it is an exhaust leak and you have stock C.I. manifolds, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!! These exhaust manifols have to "float" because of heat expansion. (That's why the bolt holes in the manifolds are so much bigger than the bolt shaft diameter.) Torque the manifold bolts to factory specs.

I figured it out, at the bottom of #8 exhaust was a slight exhaust leak. Only a small inspection mirror and some dexterity would have seen this. Replaced both gaskets, what a bitch, headers were torqued back and down by exhaust sytem and it took a lot of muscle to line up the bolts. Then removed all rockers and pre-lubed all lifters. The using the #1 and #6 TDC method adjusted all the lifters. Started it up and the sound was gone but replaced by a slightly quiter exhaust leak by #6 exhaust. AR header bolts were snug as I could get so drove the car around the beach doing my pimp daddy impersenation  and came home and was able to get a half turn on all bolts and...............NO LEAKS NO NOISE RU NS QUIET AND SO SO SO SWEET.

God I'm amazing!! Okay now I'm going out and get poopiety to celebrate this victory. Good thing to I was running out of excuses to go celebrate. If you look for me I'll be trying to find Jesus in the Tavern. :jester
