We were under the 77 today checking out the steering. The rag joint needed repair, and lots of free play in the control valve. Does the engine need to be running to test for play between the pitman arm and control valve? There is a lot of play in the control valve tapered stud, but the engine was not running.
There are two versions of repair kits for that C.V. A $20 replaces the seals. Double that cost for replacing the tapered stud you mentioned.
If the C.V. is not leaking now, I would be hesitant about rebuilding it. Its a 70 / 30 chance it will leak after a rebuild.
But first, without knowing where the extra play is located at the stud, you could re-torque the nut at the drag link. Otherwise the play is the stud inside the C.V. itself.
