What would cause my brake pedal to travel all the way to the floor and still not effectively stop the car ? The pedal travels so far that the "brake" warning light comes on. Fluid is not leaking antwhere. Is it just pads or something more $eriou$ ?
From my own personal experience (and others may have different, more qualified analysis) and assuming all lines look good and the fluid level is okay in the master cylinder:
1- air may be in the system. A good brake bleed might cure the low pedal problem (probably time for a good flush anyway.)
2- if bleeding doesn't cure the problem, your master cylinder may have become a doorstop. Replacement is not expensive.
"Fluid is not leaking antwhere." -- Are you sure? You may have to pull the wheels so you can get a good look at each caliper. I didn't notice any leaks on mine until I pulled a flat tire and had a good view of the caliper.
"Is it just pads" -- I wouldn't think the pads would be the problem. If you can rule out all four calipers, then you may have a Master Cylinder going bad.
OR, you could be pumping air back through the caliper pistons. It's a very common problem with excessive rotor runout, either front or rear or both. The solution? Check the runout...shim or "true" the rotors, or you could switch to "O" ring caliper pistons. Chuck
